Degree Certification and Apostille Services
For documents requiring an apostille, the diploma must first be notarized, either as an original bearing an authorized university signature or through a notarized affidavit attached to a copy of the diploma. Once notarized, the document must be submitted to the Secretary of State in Texas for the apostille certification.
The University Registrar’s Office can provide a set of three notarized copies of your diploma for a fee of $15.00. Each notarized copy includes the Associate Registrar’s signature, the Notary seal and signature, and the Notary’s commission expiration date.
If you do not have your diploma, one must be ordered through SMU’s official diploma vendor. Michael Sutter Company. Replacement diplomas are typically delivered within 2-3 weeks if mailing within the United States. If you would like the replacement to be delivered directly to SMU, the processing time would be approximately one week.
Obtaining an Apostille
The Apostille is issued by the Texas Secretary of State. For current fees, mailing instructions, and required forms, please visit https://www.sos.state.tx.us/authinfo.shtml. Complete forms 2101 and 2102.
After your diploma copies or certification documents have been notarized by the University Registrar’s office you may:
Have the documents mailed directly to you so that you can submit them, along with any required supporting materials, to the Texas Secretary of State.
Authorize release of the documents to a designated third party by completing the Student’s Consent for SMU to Release Information to Student’s Specified Third-Party form.
